How did contracts effect the development of Rough Trade?
Rough Trade didn't make the artists they were working with sign a contract. This became a big problem for them as, as soon as the artists; such as 'Scritti Politti' and "Stiff Little Fingers" became successful and well known, they left Rough Trade to sign up with larger corporations, which meant a huge loss for Rough Trade.

Rough Trade felt they were swaying away from their ideology by signing more commercial music. They didn't want to become a major company therefore did not make sure they had copyright; which they should have. Also, the distribution cartel Rough Trade began, caused the company to start losing money and put them at the verge of bankruptcy.

Rough Trades signed "The Smiths" in 1984, which drew Rough Trade into a whole new territory. The music industry gave way to a new genre of music known as 'Indie', which became very popular leading great success for "The Smith".
